Martín Núñez: Anatomy of the Invisible | Smoke the Moon
Martín Núñez returns to smoke the moon for his second solo show with the gallery with Anatomy of the Invisible. The Mexico City-based artist will present his wild and fantastical scenes in the casita gallery. Núñez’s work is torn from an ethereal, off-kilter storybook: his characteristically small canvases burst forward drenched in color and framed in gold. Working outside of traditional artistic convention, his paintings are occupied by extraterrestrial creatures, dreamlike landscapes and saturated figures. There is a surreal hopefulness to Núñez’s paintings. They are drenched in deep, energetic pigments; blues and greens lend his scenes the enigmatic force of a forest clearing or lapping sea. Small, nearly human figures cabal around an ascending white horse. Forest nymphs and mystic guides are seen embracing one another at the water’s edge. Throughout these scenes a truth remains: the world only blooms in full color when all creatures are in generous relation to themselves and one another. Núñez’s world is replete with moments of earthly ascension. The human and the nonhuman blur each other’s edges. Each piece invites us to peer in closer, to forge an intimacy with the absurd sprites of technicolor folklore.
