Carried Across Currents | Janey Gallery

Micaila AboudJune 13 – July 25, 2026“We are born whole, we break, we are carried across currents, and we are softened through experience”Janey is pleased to present Micaila Abboud’s solo exhibition, Carried Across Currents. In this new body of work, Abboud explores the ocean as a circular system that shapes materials, memory, and identity. Ocean-worn fragments act as witnesses to movement and environmental transformation. Ceramic vessels, tiles, and cups function as both container and archive, carrying remnants of domestic life while registering ecological processes and the passage of time. Glazes derived from processed shells record biological activity, positioning ceramics as evidence and participants in oceanic systems. Drawing on personal and inherited histories, including Arab diaspora, the work traces how memory and identity circulate across oceans. Through materials and form, Carried Across Currents connects coasts, generations, and cultures, while expanding contemporary ceramic practice into ecological and diasporic inquiry.Micaila Abboud (b. 1995) is a Lebanese-Canadian ceramic artist and marine scientist living and working in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Her practice explores the intersection of material memory and ecological grief through handbuilt and wheel-thrown stoneware forms inspired by coral, shells, and the coastal landscapes. Her work has been exhibited at Janey (Cambridge, Canada), Art Toronto (Toronto, Canada), Plural (Montréal, Canada) and Elsewhere Fair (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania). Abboud holds a Bachelor of Technology in Engineering and Applied Science (2019) and a Master’s degree in Marine Studies (2022) from Memorial University of Newfoundland. Her scientific training informs her ceramics practice, inviting viewers to notice, feel, and reflect on our oceanic systems. Abboud is represented by Janey.
