EXPO CHICAGO 2025
EXPOSURE Booth 114
NAVY PIER, CHICAGO
April 24-27, 2025
Superposition Gallery is honored to present Sanctuaries of Perception, a dual booth presentation of Damien Davis and Maya Seas for Expo Chicago 2025, and the nomadic gallery's first presentation in the Midwest.
Sanctuaries of Perception presents two distinct yet complementary voices exploring the relationship between identity, the body, and perception.
Damien Davis’ laser-cut acrylic works interrogate the limits of abstraction and the politics embedded in the act of seeing. Stripped of recognizable iconography, his works focus on formal elements such as line, shape, and space, yet they remain inextricably linked to the artist’s identity and lived experience. As a Black, queer artist, Davis challenges the notion of neutrality in abstraction, addressing the ways in which bodies are perceived through layers of societal assumptions. His works confront the viewer with the question of whether abstraction can ever be truly divorced from the politics of identity.
In contrast, Maya Seas’ paintings unveil a personal mythology that traces the sacred and the intimate. Her recent paintings evoke a sense of ritual and spiritual connection, inviting the viewer into dreamlike landscapes. The scenes also reflect the artist’s experiences with energy healing, mysticism and metaphysics.
Damien Davis comments, “These new works mark a more experimental direction for me – leaning further into abstraction while continuing to explore, intimacy, interference, and the digital tools that shape how we care for one another.”
Maya Seas comments, “I am searching my subconscious for moments that carry feelings of safety and peace. My art is a practice of building sanctuaries out of these moments and offering them outwards as prayer.”
